On Tuesday February 10th, 2004 I arrived in Portland, Oregon on a train that was 5 hours late. My friend met me at the train station and we quickly went to drop off my bags and contact some people to find something to get into. Of course, we settled on seeing some hip-hop. I was a little leery of what could possibly be happening on a Tuesday night but apparently Portland has a lot to offer. We saw Old Dominion with Chosen. Old dominion is two MCs Smoke and Destro. Chosen is the live band they rhyme with. All together both groups combine to have eight members and a lot of smooth jazz-hop covered up with freestyles so on point you might not believe its improv.
Chosen is a great group of musicians consisting of a sax, trumpet, keys, drums, bass and guitars. The variety of instruments makes for a never boring sonic texture. The saxophone player adds more depth to a beat than any 808 could ever dream of. Smoke and Destro have rhymed together for eight years and have been performing with chosen providing beats on the spot for about sixteen months. The fact that the two MCs have paid dues together for so long is evident when they go bar for bar. They keep their substance and compliment each other perfectly, quipping one clever exchange after another. I asked the duo to tell me, in one word, why they rhyme. Destro answered freedom. Smoke answered artform. Both words fit the group’s conscious improvised style. These guys definitely made the Northwest look good in my eyes. Old Dominion currently has material available on Fat Beats records. Look for the release “Boom Bap Project”.
